DESMOND
Diabetes Education Courses are for people recently diagnosed
with Type 2 Diabetes are continuing to be a great success!
The Diabetes Group
is working with the Somerset Primary Care Team to deliver
diabetes education to newly diagnosed people with Type 2 Diabetes. The team provides
expert advice on a wide variety of issues related to diabetes and includes:
• What
is diabetes?
• Diet
• Exercise
• Medication
• Complications
• Living with diabetes
• Foot care
• Behaviour change and goal setting |
Future sessions will be extended to include
education for people with ongoing diabetes, and should provide
an update
for people who have had diabetes for some time and
wish to revisit some topics such as diet, medication and
complications.

Diabetes Education Courses
for both people living with Type
1 diabetes
and healthcare professionals.
Our vision is to improve outcomes for people with Type 1
diabetes through high quality structured education which
is embedded in the Health Service.
DAFNE is a robust,
evidence based structured education programme for people
with Type 1 diabetes. The European evidence base (including
a full RCT) for DAFNE which spans more than 20 years was
complimented here in the UK with a feasibility study, including
a further RCT, which fully met the MRC criteria for complex
interventions.

Diabetes Education Courses for children with
Type 1
Structured
education is considered a vital part of patient support
packages, particularly in terms of empowering people
to take control of their own disease and integrating
self-management skills into daily life. Offering
structured education to children in Somerset is an
essential component of a diabetes speciality service.
